Have you ever really stopped and thought about one of dentistry’s most cutting edge dental treatments? If you’re looking to improve your dental experience, oral health, and your smile’s appearance, laser dentistry is worth considering

Laser dentistry has been found to be less painful and has minimal discomfort. It can be used for multiple dental treatments, and has some key benefits too.

So what is a dental laser?

Laser is simply light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. During a procedure, the laser emits light energy in a narrow, concentrated beam which produces a reaction when it hits tissue, allowing it to remove or shape tissue. If the drilling sound at the dentist makes you a little nervous, then dental laser treatment might be for you.

Soft vs hard tissue laser

For our understanding, soft tissue lasers are used for procedures involving soft tissues in the mouth, like gums, whilst hard tissue lasers are used to cut hard tissues in the mouth, such as teeth. Lasers have a variety of uses and are capable of a much finer and more precise cut than older tools like scalpels, and they also fulfil many other functions. Most people can have cavities cleaned out with laser, and 80-85% of the time this can be done without anesthetic or shots.

When can lasers be used?

Laser dentistry is used in a variety of procedures, including treating hypersensitivity, treating tooth decay, gum disease and even whitening teeth. Some reasons which should be encouraging to those considering the laser route include the following less bleeding, faster healing period, reduced chance of infection, and probably most important for the majority of us, reduced pain.
